Discussed new JTEG Idea and Project Submissions:
No New Submissions
New Business:
- The group spent the first 25 minutes discussing and coordinating actions for the Laser Coating Removal Forum to be conducted virtually on the afternoons of 3-4 December. Interest is high as 70 people have registered for the event.
- Chris Root (FRC-SW), Lloyd Hackle, and Jon Rankin presented a brief on “Enhancing Fatigue Lifetimes and Precision Component Shaping by Laser Peening. The brief included a description of the laser peening process, the benefits that can be achieved, and presented Military and commercial examples where laser peening has been used to increase the life of components by mitigating stress and fatigue in the materials used. The brief also described examples where laser peening is used for forming and form correction of items such as panels. This capability can also be used to create low-cost prototypes. Despite the obvious benefits of laser peening, there are some challenges being faced. They include a lack of familiarity with the technology by potential users, and relatively high initial investment costs. For more information contact the presenters.
