Minutes:

Event:  On 29 November 2022, the Joint Technology Exchange Group (JTEG), in coordination with the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS), hosted a virtual forum on “Digital Maintenance & Point of Maintenance”.

Purpose:  The purpose of this forum was to discuss the challenges and solutions, research and development, and implementation of digital maintenance & point of maintenance capabilities in support of DoD sustainment.

Welcome:  Steve McKee, OSD-MR, welcomed everyone to the forum and provided a brief introduction of the presenters and emphasized the significance, challenges and impact that digital maintenance & point of maintenance related innovations have within the DoD sustainment community.

Administrative:  There were 42 people in attendance on the open forum. The presentations, along with questions and answers, were conducted through Zoom.Gov which provided a well-used chat capability for comments and Q&A.

RSO – “Digital Flightline Management – Aircraft Information Readiness System” – Tyron Gray (AF Rapid Sustainment Office) described the RSO innovative solutions mission and then discussed the Aircraft Information Readiness System (AIRS) which will provide a web-based tool enabling streamlined data entry, workflow management, live situational awareness, integration with the Integrated Maintenance Data System, and pre-kitting, while feeding into augmented reality work instructions. The tool aggregates tactical maintenance information and makes it available to production supervisors and expediters.

AVARIS Software Tool – Chris Root and Edzel Luico (Sharp Vision Software (SVS)) described AVARIS as a 3D model-based work instruction authoring tool for maintenance. Selected for a COMFRC SBIR phase II award, SVS developed a process and software for creating visualization models and digital work instructions that supports the Naval model-based enterprise environment and Industry 4.0. AVARIS improves the effectiveness, productivity and quality in Aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) environments and improves training methods. They described their objectives with its’ operational use and demonstrated the AVARIS tool.

Augmented Reality Remote Maintenance Support Service (ARRMSS) – Jason Bickford (NSWC) described ARRMSS as an augmented reality Hololens 2 based remote tech assist tool that virtually brings together Fleet maintainers and shore-side subject matter experts through a combination of features to include audio, video, chat, hologram interaction, and file exchange. ARRMSS enables remote technical assistance possible from shore-based subject matter experts.

Q&A – A Q&A occurred after each briefer finished their presentation. The slides cleared for public release will be posted on the JTEG website with these minutes.

Closing Comments: Steve McKee thanked the presenters and participants for their attendance and all the work being done to support digital maintenance & point of maintenance innovations in support of DoD sustainment operations.

Action Items:

  • Obtain copies of remaining cleared presentations once they are approved to post to a public website, and post to the JTEG website at https://jteg.ncms.org/.

Next JTEG Meeting: The next scheduled JTEG virtual forum is 31 January 2023, 1:00 – 3:00 pm EST. The topic is “Asset Visibility”.
