On 9 November 2016 the Joint Technology Exchange Group (JTEG) Principals and representatives conducted a monthly teleconference. A brief summary of the teleconference follows:

Reviewed Previous Forum:

Oct 25 – Fiber Optic Systems Repair, Test, and Training:

  • Coordinate with Mark Beranek to schedule a government only teleconference to discuss and increase the awareness of the fiber optic cable mechanical splicing tool (LMI/OSD/NAVAIR)
  • Greg spoke with Mark about submitting a cross-cutting project proposal when/if funding becomes available.

Upcoming JTEG Technology Forums:

  • Nov 29 – Technology Enhanced Workforce Development: The draft agenda is:

  • Virtual Reality for Distributed Workforce Settings – Miranda Keeney (LMI/PSU)
  • Enhancing maintenance with Augmented and Mixed Reality Technologies – Michael Robinson & Patrick Violante (NCWC Philadelphia)
  • USMC Augmented Reality Paint Simulator – Steve Allen (USMC, Albany)
  • Naval Training Center – Orlando – TBD (Bruce Wilhelm is looking into it.)
  • Innovative Training Solutions or similar training related project at AFETS – TBD (Tom Naguy and Luke Burke will contact AFETS)
  • Discussed an Augmented Reality Lab at Carderock, but decided their work is similar to NCWC Philadelphia.
  • Kurt mentioned, and sent to the group, an “Early Bird” article on using virtual reality at the Submarine Training Center in Hawaii. The article is worth reading, however the effort is more of an operational focus than maintenance.

  • Dec 5 – Additive Manufacturing Town Hall: Greg discussed the Dec 5th Additive Manufacturing Town Hall being conducted in Albuquerque during the DoD Maintenance Symposium. He stated that this event will occur in lieu of a Dec JTEG forum. The 10:00 am EST (8:00 am local) event will be shown virtually on a live feed. A dry run was successfully conducted in the afternoon. An announcement that includes the link for participating virtually will be sent out 2 weeks prior to encourage on site participation prior to then.

  • Dec 5 – Maintenance Innovation Challenge (MIC) Finalists: The MIC finalists will present at the DoD Maintenance Symposium at 5:00 pm EST (3:00 pm local). This event will also be shown virtually on a live feed. An announcement that includes the link for participating virtually will be sent out 2 weeks prior. The JTEG may decide to have the finalists brief during additional JTEG forums.

New/Other Business:

JTEG Forum Program General Comments:  The JTEG Principals were asked for their feedback on the impact of the forum program. Below are some of the comments:

  • It is a snowball that has gained size and momentum in participation and information exchange. They are integral, foundational, and very valuable.
  • It’s a “mixed bag”. We received both positive and negative feedback. Some of the topics receive greater interest than others.
  • We allow our employees to receive continuous learning points in related technical training areas.
  • The follow-up with access to slides and POCs is important.
  • A recommendation to have a few forums each year focused on industry and technology. We may be able to use NDIA or NCMS to help pull it all together.
  • Use the JTEG website to receive feedback on the JTEG forums. Maybe in the form of surveys.
  • Provide “Ghost Emails” to the JTEG Principals to send out to their communities to help promote the JTEG forums.

Selection of 2017 JTEG Forum topics:  The group reviewed lists of previous JTEG forum topics and the innovation categories from the recent MIC submissions.  The principals decided that a survey of possible topics would be sent out, with the capability to write-in additional topics.  Once reviewed and the topics ranked by the JTEG principals, the survey will be sent out to the JTEG community and the CTMA community via the CTMA Connector.

Action Items:

  • Coordinate with Mark Beranek to schedule a government only teleconference to discuss and increase the awareness of the fiber optic cable mechanical splicing tool (LMI/OSD)
  • Look into what the Naval Training Center in Orlando might have to discuss at next JTEG forum (Bruce Wilhelm) – Note: They are unable to able to present MRTS-3D on the 29th due to a schedule conflict, but are interested if a later opportunity arises.)
  • Innovative Training Solutions or similar training related project at AFETS – TBD (Tom Naguy and Luke Burke will contact AFETS)
  • Send out calendar invite for 5 Dec AM Town Hall and MIC Finalists briefs, on 21 Nov. (NCMS/LMI)
  • Develop a survey of possible JTEG Forum Topics for 2017 and send to JTEG Principals, then to JTEG Community. (LMI)

Next Meeting(s):

  • Nov 29 – Technology Enhanced Workforce Development – JTEG Forum
  • Dec 5 – Additive Manufacturing Town Hall (2016 DoD Mx Symposium)
  • Dec 14 – JTEG Principals’ Meeting  (Moved from Dec 7)
    • Jan 31 – Additive Repair Supporting Maintenance Operations
