Universal Surface Inspection Tool

Project Number (JTEG Assigned) NS-09-0005
Project Title Universal Surface Inspection Tool
Service NAVSEA
Command NAVSEA / Naval Shipyards
Implementation Depot PSNSY&IMF
Project Lead Kurt Doehnert, SEA 04XP, kurt.doehnert@navy.mil
TI Goals Supported C-1, S-2, P-3
Focus Area Coatings/Corrosion Control
Platform General Ship
Platform Specific All
Implemented Technology Digital
Problem Definition

The methods currently employed for these measurements is analog in nature and requires both significant time and labor to performance.

Proposed Solution

Taking advantage of current electronic collection systems, these new tools will also allow for the automatic recording of data into a data base. The net effect of using these new technologies will be to significantly reduce the time (and cost) associated with the tank quality insurance inspections

Expected Result

This initiative seeks to replace the current methods used to measure surface profile, conductivity and dry film thickness with new methods to reduce the time and effort required to verify conditions exist for coating application.

Benefits
  1. Reduction in the time needed to manually record the results of the inspection
  2. Improved accuracy to reduce the number of errors
  3. Improved identification of poorly prepared surfaces to reduce the potential for premature coating failure
  4. Reduction
Unfunded Requirement
