On 3 August 2016 the Joint Technology Exchange Group (JTEG) Principals and representatives conducted a monthly teleconference. A brief summary of the teleconference follows:
Reviewed Previous Forum:
July 26 – Alternative Energy / Energy Efficiencies:
1) The forum had 42 online connections with approximately 50 participants. The briefs covered a broad field of capabilities within the alternative energy / energy efficiencies area. ESTCP and DOE joined the MCLB-Albany, Tooele AD, and FRC-SW in discussing energy efforts which included thermal energy, wind power, solar energy, and remote energy audits. NCMS briefed a new technology which uses a plasma field and magnetic fusion to produce controllable and sustainable thermal energy.
2) Janice Bryant mentioned that NAVSEA is working on an effort that uses industrial waste to fuel a plasma that creates heat energy. Greg Kilchenstein asked her to send him more information.
Upcoming JTEG Technology Forums:
1) Aug 30 – Welding Inspection, Operations, and Training: The abstract is loaded on the JTEG website. JTEG Principals were urged to identify potential ongoing efforts and briefers/POCs within the next 2 weeks. Possible forum topics discussed include:
a. Phased Array Ultrasonic Inspection of welds in submarines (NAVSEA)
b. Electron Beam welding
c. Friction Stir welding
d. Deformation Resistance welding
e. Training (Virtual, simulated, etc.)
• TARDEC Training Program (NCMS)
f. NAVAIR identified Mark Sapp (FRC-E) as their lead materials engineer and contact for the forum
g. NCMS will make contact with Automated Precision Weld Inspection Capability
2) Sep 27 – Asset Visibility; What, Where and Condition:
New/Other Business:
Requesting technology forum topics from the JTEG community: Greg Kilchenstein presented an idea to submit a request to the JTEG community seeking volunteer candidates to present their technology at the next JTEG monthly technology forum. This would potentially bring fresh new ideas to the group and expand the breadth of possible topics. The idea was accepted by the other JTEG Principals and will be initiated for the 30 August forum. These volunteers will augment the briefers which the JTEG principals continue to provide.
Action Items:
1) Contact SMEs in your organization to identify potential speakers at the 30 August JTEG Forum on “Welding Inspection, Operations, and Training”. (JTEG Principals/NCMS)
2) Contact SMEs in your organization to identify potential speakers at the 27 Sep JTEG Forum on “Asset Visibility; What, Where and Condition”. (ALL)
3) Send a request to the JTEG community seeking technology candidates for the next 2 JTEG monthly technology forums. (LMI)
4) Send information to Greg Kilchenstein on a NAVSEA effort that uses industrial waste to fuel a plasma that creates heat energy. (Janice Bryant – NAVSEA)
Next Meeting(s):
• Aug 30 – Welding Inspection, Operations, and Training – JTEG Forum
• Sep 7 – JTEG Principals’ Meeting
